3.) Traffic-type Light Shows Status of Flood Precautions

In the near future German communities will be able to present themselves for expert assessment in minute detail with confidence: a flood precaution “traffic light” from green (“all assignments completed”)  through yellow and ochre, up to red (“catastrophic precaution conditions”) shows the up-to-the-minute situation as regards protection of people and property.

Together with the German Association for Water Management, Wastewater and Waste (Deutsche Vereinigung für Wasserwirtschaft, Abwasser und Abfall, DWA), the German Federal Environmental Foundation (Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt, DBU) has adopted an ambitious new goal: to develop an auditing process, “Flooding – how well prepared are we?” as a new instrument for communities, and to put new strategies  for the minimization of flooding damage on the agenda, before destructive flooding once again occurs.

At a public event in Osnabrück in early July, the results of the first evaluations were presented, whereby the collected experiences of both auditors and auditees received a high grade on the whole. The presentations and additional details can be found at: http://www.dbu.de/hochwasseraudit
