3.) Vocational training is the key to sustainable work and business activity

The joint expert conference of BIBB and the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt (DBU) on March 17th and 18th, 2015 in Osnabrück used the occasion of the World Program for Action “Education for Sustainable Development” to formally issue a plea for the need to act on educational policy in the area of vocational education and training. Some 150 participants made a wide range of proposals, with which various spheres of activity, lines of development and strategic perspectives on vocational education and training for sustainable development can be carried further and improved.

Nearly 30 vocational education concepts from the second half of the UN Decade “Education for Sustainable Development” (2005-2014) were introduced in terms of their relation to structure-building approaches and hot topics in matters of sustainability. The participants discussed concrete lines of development, based on which the factor of sustainability would be strengthened in training regimes and in continuing education, and also in the qualification process for vocational education personnel. Multiplier networks would also be extended, and training centers developed further as sustainability learning locations.
