3.) Seven Storeys in Wood Construction

Project E 3 in Berlin stands for the first wood construction in a building with seven floors in urban gap development. In addition, the dealing with the issue of fire protection is exemplary. The high safety requirements of the Building Class 5 have been met by an intelligent design with the building material of wood. Due to the high industrial prefabrication of the construction, the building shell was largely completed in just ten weeks, regardless of the weather. The realization as a timber frame construction urged the development of entirely new detail solutions. Both the selection of materials for the primary and secondary structure as well as for the interior design was based on the premise of substantial reduction of primary energy needs while improving healthy living simultaneously. According to the manufacturers, thus the primary effort of all materials used is in total by about 50% less than for comparable traditionally built multi-family houses. In addition, the heat demand for heating and hot water corresponding to the KfW-40-standard is fully covered by connection to the district heating network of renewable energy.

The enormous importance of this project is reflected both by the very high level of attention in the press and through various awards, including for example a first place in the presentation of the German Timber Construction Award 2009 (Deutscher Holzbaupreis).
