2.) Plastic waste from hospitals – A gusher for the environment

The Logmed Cooperation GmbH (Halle / Saale) develops and operates facilities for milling, fluid separation and disinfection or sterilization of waste occurring in health care. This waste contains up to 80% high-quality plastics which are so far disposed of in waste incinerators thermally. The project aimed to develop a technology for the separation and feedstock recycling of plastics to high-quality synthetic oil. Thus, the natural oil resources are protected, the CO2 emissions from waste combustion avoided and internal hospital costs lowered. The project optimized the oiling technology to serial production. The pilot plant in Halle has been working continuously since May 2009. Depending on the input, premium and average light paraffinic oils and waxes, heavy oil, naphtha and process gases are produced, a maximum of 1 ton per day. The produced light oil is engine-ready, a CHP which is powered with an oil-water mixture shows excellent combustion and performance parameters over months. The Hochschule Merseburg (University of Applied Sciences) supported the project in physical, chemical and technological issues. The Steinbeis Transfer Center Technology & Resource Management
(RTM / Halle) was responsible for the project management.
