With the project of the Northwest German Forest Research Institute (“Nordwestdeutsche Forstliche Versuchsanstalt”, NW-FVA) in Göttingen, based on the example of practices in the state forests of Schleswig-Holstein, a solutional approach for two important goals of forest protection is being developed: first, the protection of biotic communities in deciduous forests in the old growth- and decomposition phases, and secondly, the protection of endangered forest biotopes in extreme habitats (wetland-, bog- and dry forests). The project seeks wooded areas between 5 and 10 ha in size, which due to their near-natural states, rarity and endangered status are especially suitable for nature conservation, and can therefore be considered “biodiversity hotspots”.
